Troubleshoot

Something not working? Find your problem below, or press Ctrl + F and search for the error message you see. Solutions are listed roughly from quickest to most drastic, so start at the top.

(G) Graphics

Section titled “(G) Graphics”
G01: The game looks distorted or scaled wrong in windowed mode

Windows display scaling can confuse older games that don’t handle high-DPI screens.

Symptoms

  • The interface looks pixelated, stretched or unreadable on a high-resolution screen.
  • The interface looks oversized.

Try this

  • Enable High DPI Aware (A01).
  • Launch once in fullscreen, then switch to windowed mode.
G02: Weird glitches like see-through objects, inverted colours, blackouts or ghost objects

Usually the old DirectX 9 engine struggling with anti-aliasing on a modern graphics card.

Symptoms

  • See-through or X-ray visuals
  • Invisible terrain or soldiers
  • Inverted colours
  • Objects turning black

Try this

  • Turn off anti-aliasing (A02).
  • Delete your profile and cache (A03).
  • Use a lower resolution and refresh rate.1
  • Disable High DPI Aware (A01).
  • Reinstall the game.
G03: The mouse skips or stutters, or the aim jumps

A long-standing bug in how the game calculates mouse movement on modern hardware, not a problem with your mouse. See this thread for background.

Symptoms

  • Stutters when moving the mouse quickly or far to the side
  • Skipped frames when turning

Try this

  • Install the Mouse Skip Fix. It patches BF2142.exe to correct the mouse calculation, and takes about a minute.
G04: Low FPS or stuttering on a laptop

Laptops with two graphics chips often run older games on the weaker, built-in one.

Symptoms

  • Much lower FPS than your laptop should manage
  • Stuttering even on low settings

Try this

  • Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add BF2142.exe, and set it to High performance.
  • Or pick your dedicated GPU for BF2142.exe in the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software.
  • Plug in your charger, as many laptops slow down the GPU on battery.

(C) Crashes

Section titled “(C) Crashes”
C01: The game crashes to desktop after a black screen

Most often caused by a video mode or setting your PC doesn’t support.

Symptoms

  • Crash after a brief black screen
  • Crash before the intro or main menu

Try this

  • Delete your profile and cache (A03).
  • Enable High DPI Aware (A01).
  • Run the game in windowed mode.
  • Use a resolution and refresh rate your monitor supports.
  • Windows 7 only: use the GameUX Fix tool in BF2142 Hub.
  • Run the Vidcon Fix (details).
  • Follow this video.
  • Reinstall the game.
C02: The game crashes when changing audio settings

BF2142 crashes when your PC has more than 9 audio input devices. Tools like VirtualCable or Voicemeeter, which add extra inputs, are common culprits.

Symptoms

  • Crash when adjusting audio settings
  • Crash when joining a match, sometimes after a short beep

Try this

  • In Control Panel → Sound → Recording, disable unused inputs so fewer than 10 remain.
  • In Device Manager, uninstall unused audio inputs.
  • Uninstall apps that add lots of inputs (e.g. VirtualCable, Voicemeeter).
  • In-game, set Audio Renderer to Software and Enable EAX to No.

C03: The game freezes or crashes when pressing Alt

Reportedly a bug introduced in the last official patch. See this thread for background.

Symptoms

  • 3D map icons appear or disappear
  • The game freezes or crashes

Try this

  • For crashes on Alt + Tab, turn off anti-aliasing (A02).
  • Press Esc to open the menu, then Esc again to return to the game.
  • Unbind or rebind Alt if it triggers an overlay.
  • Restart the game.
C04: Runtime error or missing DLL when starting the game

Usually a missing Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX 9 runtime.

Symptoms

  • “The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP71.dll was not found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because d3dx9_xx.dll was not found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because dice_py.dll was not found.”
  • “Runtime Error! This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.”

Try this

C05: “memory.dll sanity check” error when joining a game or loading a map

See this thread for background.

Symptoms

  • “memory.dll: sanity check: block size xxxxxxx (xxxxxx mb) doesn’t seem sane”
  • “memory.dll: all alloc attempts failed for size xxxxxxxxx”

Try this

  • Turn off anti-aliasing (A02).
  • Lower your graphics settings to Medium or Low.
  • Let Windows manage the page file (run SystemPropertiesPerformance.exe → Advanced → Virtual memory).
  • In Task Manager, set the game’s CPU affinity to a single core.
  • Update your motherboard’s BIOS.
  • Reinstall the game.
C06: Nothing happens when I launch the game

Symptoms

  • You click Play, but no window or error appears
  • The game shows up in Task Manager for a moment, then disappears

Try this

  • Check your antivirus quarantine. Patched game files like BF2142.exe are sometimes flagged by mistake. Restore them and add your game folder to the exceptions.
  • Open Task Manager and end any BF2142.exe still running from an earlier attempt.
  • Reinstall the OpenSpy patches in BF2142 Hub and make sure all four ticks are green.
  • Delete your profile and cache (A03).
  • Still nothing? See C01 and C04.
C07: Project Remaster crashes when I spawn

Remaster’s expanded kit customization can break when you use a soldier created for vanilla BF2142.

Try this

  • Create a new soldier just for Project Remaster, and keep your vanilla soldier for vanilla servers.
  • Still crashing? Ask on the Remaster Discord.

(S) Servers

Section titled “(S) Servers”
S01: Error when creating an account

Symptoms

  • “A system error occurred. Try again later. If problem persists, contact customer support.”

Try this

  • Use a different account name or email, as they may already be taken.
  • Check that your country code, postal code and birthdate are valid, and avoid special characters.
  • Ask on the Reclamation Discord, as registration may be down for maintenance.
S02: “Could not connect to EA Online” or stuck contacting the master server

This one has many possible causes: your connection, the Hub, the OpenSpy patches, a firewall or antivirus, your ISP, or the master server itself.

Symptoms

  • Stuck at “Contacting EA Master Server”
  • “Could not connect to EA Online. Retry, or click OK to go into Offline mode.”
  • “EA Master Server is down. Please use BF2142Unlocker”
  • “You are not connected to the Internet. Click OK to select a soldier to play offline, or try to reconnect.”

Try this

  • Check that your internet connection is stable.
  • Reinstall the OpenSpy patches and make sure all four ticks are green.
  • Install the OpenSpy patches manually (A05).
  • Fully close BF2142 Hub and start it again.
  • Use Reset Hub in BF2142 Hub, or reinstall the Hub.
  • Allow BF2142.exe through Windows Firewall on private and public networks.
  • Make sure your antivirus isn’t blocking the game or the Hub.
  • Ask on the Reclamation Discord, as OpenSpy may be down for maintenance.
  • Use a VPN to get around ISP restrictions.
S03: No servers in the server browser

Try this

  • Untick all filter options (see how).
  • Use the Missing Servers tool in BF2142 Hub.
S04: “This map contains customized content” when joining a Reclamation server

You’re missing a map, or have an outdated version of it.

Symptoms

  • “This map contains customized content. The map creator might have more information about the map on the community site.”

Try this

  • Install the map pack, or the map the server is running.
  • Make sure each map’s folder sits directly inside Levels, with no extra parent folder.
  • Already have it? Uninstall that map and reinstall it with the Hub’s individual map download.
  • Kicked with this message during a map change? That’s normal, just rejoin.
S05: “This server only allows players with unmodified content to join”

You’ve modified files in the mod you’re playing, or joined with the wrong mod.

Symptoms

  • “This server only allows players with unmodified content to join. Revert your version of Battlefield 2142 to the current version to join.”

Try this

  • For Reclamation or other vanilla servers, use a clean, unmodded game with no addons or file tweaks in \mods\bf2142.
  • For modded servers, install exactly the same mod and files the server runs.
S06: “Invalid CD-Key” when joining a server

Your game’s CD key is missing from the registry, usually because an install step was skipped.

Try this

  • Use the CD-Key Fix tool in BF2142 Hub or the Remaster Launcher.
  • For NovGames servers, run the ACTIVATOR and click Activate.
  • Run Battlefield 2142_code.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\Support and enter a CD key.2
  • Install the registry files (A04).
  • Reinstall the game.

(P) Gameplay

Section titled “(P) Gameplay”
P01: My recordings don’t show up in BattleRecorder

With the OpenSpy patches installed, demos don’t appear under Community → Battle Recorder → Library.

Try this

P02: Mouse or keyboard stop working after loading into a map

Probably a corrupted controls.con file or a hiccup in how the game detects your devices. Background: 1, 2, 3.

Symptoms

  • Mouse and keyboard work in menus, but not after loading into a map
  • Alt + Tab works, but Esc doesn’t open the menu
  • All control options appear blank

Try this

  • Reset your controls: Options → Controls → Reset to Default.
  • Delete your profile and cache (A03).
  • Try different USB ports and unplug devices you don’t need.
  • Turn off mouse acceleration: Control Panel → Mouse → Pointer Options → untick Enhance pointer precision.
  • Fully quit overlay apps (e.g. Discord, GeForce Experience, EA App).
  • Restart your PC.
P03: Weapons or unlocks are missing

Symptoms

  • Only the default weapons and gadgets are available
  • The customization screen is empty or locked

Try this

  • Make sure you’re logged in online. Unlocks come from the OpenSpy master server, so they’re missing in offline mode.
  • Reinstall the OpenSpy patches in BF2142 Hub and log in again.
  • Using Project Remaster through the Hub? The Remaster team suggests playing one multiplayer round in vanilla BF2142 with that soldier first, which grants its unlocks permanently.
  • Want all unlocks without going online? Use BF2142Unlocker.

(H) BF2142 Hub

Section titled “(H) BF2142 Hub”
H01: Application exception or mdIBF error in BF2142 Hub

Usually either your ISP blocks the Hub from reaching its online services, or the game’s registry entries are missing.

Symptoms

  • Errors starting with mdIBF.ReadConfig, mdIBF.Banner, mdIBF.ReadServer or MDIBFclient: usually a connection problem
  • An error starting with mdIBF.CDKeyLaunch: usually missing registry entries
  • mdIBF.DNS “no such host is known” when downloading maps: a known Hub issue with a workaround

Try this

  • For connection errors, use a VPN to get around ISP restrictions.
  • For registry errors, install the registry files (A04).
  • Reinstall the game.
H02: BF2142 Hub looks distorted or scaled wrong

Windows display scaling can confuse apps that don’t handle high-DPI screens.

Try this

  • Enable High DPI Aware for the Hub (A01).
H03: Can’t install the OpenSpy patches, no green ticks

Symptoms

  • Nothing happens after clicking Install
  • Not every item gets a green tick

Try this

  • Run BF2142 Hub as administrator.
  • Fully close the Hub and start it again.
  • Use Reset Hub in BF2142 Hub, or reinstall the Hub.
  • Install the OpenSpy patches manually (A05).

(A) Common fixes

Section titled “(A) Common fixes”
A01: Enable High DPI Aware

Apply this to BF2142.exe to fix the game, or to BF2142 Hub.exe to fix the Hub:

  • Game: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142
  • Hub: C:\Program Files (x86)\BF2142 Hub 2
  1. Right-click the .exe → Properties → Compatibility → Change high DPI settings.
  2. Tick Override high DPI scaling behavior and set it to Application.
  3. Click OK.

Good to know:

  • Redo this every time you click Install in the Hub, as patching replaces BF2142.exe and resets the setting.
  • To turn it off again, untick the box from step 2.
A02: Turn off anti-aliasing

Either:

  • Set Anti-Aliasing to off in the game’s video options, or
  • Use the Anti-Aliasing Off tool in BF2142 Hub.

No issues with it on? 4x is fine. Need it off but still want smoothing? Force anti-aliasing in your NVIDIA or AMD control panel instead.

A03: Delete your profile and cache

Resets your profiles, including any broken video or audio settings, and clears the shader cache. Pick one:

  • Delete the Battlefield 2142 folder in Documents.
  • Use Clear Cache and Delete Profile in BF2142 Hub.
  • Use Clear Cache and Reset Game-Settings in the Remaster Launcher.
A04: Install the registry files
  1. Open the registry file generator, set your game PATH and CDKEY, and download the file.
  2. Open the file in a text editor and set Version to 1.51 and BuildNr to 1.10.77.0.
  3. Save it, then double-click the file to install it.
A05: Install the OpenSpy patches manually
  1. Download the patches from MediaFire, Google Drive or the Reclamation Discord.
  2. Copy bf2142.exe, RendDX9_ori.dll and RendDX9.dll into your game folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142), replacing the existing files.
  3. Restart BF2142 Hub. You should now see four green ticks.
A06: Install the Visual C++ 2003 runtime

The Visual C++ 2003 runtime was never released on its own, it came with .NET Framework 1.1. Install both of these to add msvcr71.dll and msvcp71.dll to your system:

  1. .NET Framework 1.1
  2. .NET Framework SDK 1.1

(D) Diagnostics

D01: Get help with your diagnostics

The fastest way to get help is to share your diagnostics on Discord:

  1. Launch BF2142 Hub, open the Help tab and click Advanced Diagnostics.
  2. Click Copy.
  3. Paste the results in a help channel, with a short note on what’s happening and what you’ve tried.

Where to ask: GetBF2142, BF2142 Reclamation or BF2142 Remastered.

D02: Reading [File Check]

A healthy [File Check] looks exactly like this:
